Power Systems 2009 – XIV Storage System Implementation

General information about the XIV and its implementation-approaches:

XIV Modules

  • One module consists out of 4core Intel CPU with 8GB RAM
  • with the next version of XIV, low power CPUs will be used

  7. 73TB
  8. 79TB

Poweroff-switch

There is no emergency poweroff switch (EPO) on the XIV. The EPO is on the UPS-system. Also there is a quick power down command available via the CLI.

Quick shutdown of the XIV equals to dataloss, as most of the data is cached within the RAM of the modules.

Remote Support

  • Modem
  • SSH
  • AOS (Assist on Site) similar to a RDP session
  • VPN

Multi-pathing

  • only native support by OS

with Symantec Veritas Storage functions SF 5 following is supported by IBM

  • volume management
  • multipathing

SAN BOOT

  • supported for almost all OS

Clustersoftware support with XIV filesystems

  • IBM PowerHA
  • IBM GPFS
  • Oracel RAC
  • Windows Cluster Service
  • VMware cluster

Host attachement

Step I

  1. define host
  2. map volume to hosts

Step II

  1. Ports defined to host
  • can be FC or iSCSI
  • defined by WWPN or iSCSI Name

WWPN

  • last digit = Portnumber on switch
  • second last digit = modulnumber
  • 3th- 4th last digit = switchnumber

IO module load

  • IO load is not being loadbalanced by the XIV
  • administrator has to zone the modules in a good manner so IO load is balanced via the zoning

SVC best practices

– use 2 ports of each interface module per SVC

  • Port 1,3
  • each SVC port to all available interface modules

– one MDG per XIV system

  • 1GB extend
  • map all volumes to all SVC Ports

Re-stripe VDIDSK using SVC rebalancing script if needed
